You may just want to spend your time relaxing by the pool and strolling to bars and restaurants of an evening. But for the more adventurous a hire car opens up so many possibilities.
The Troodos Mountains are about 1.5 hours drive and offer a different side to Cyprus. There are numerous trails offering stunning views, stream valleys, waterfalls and fascinating flaura and fauna.
Cape Greco is only 20 minutes from the apartment with some lovely beaches, amazing cliffs, sea caves and some great snorkelling opportunities. And cliff diving if that’s what you like!
Northern Cyprus
Cyprus is a divided island. However we have found people on both sides to be nothing but helpful and friendly. There is so much to see on the north eastern side of the island. Don’t let the crossing put you off.
The crossing point into Northern Cyprus is 20 minutes from the apartment. Using a map!
Follow the route through Sotira to Vrysoules then through the UK base at Ayios Nikolaos to the check point. The procedure is very simple. There are two kiosks. You need to take your passports. At the check point you buy an additional insurance (about 15 euros for 7 days) fill out a visa and you’re through.
The road from the crossing takes you straight into the medieval walled city of Famagusta. Once one of the major trading ports in the Eastern Med. Now the old city is fascinating to look round and a walk along the beach will take you as far as the UN buffer zone that divides the island and allows views of the ‘Ghost town’ frozen in time since the 1974 invasion by the Turkish army.
Before entering Famagusta there is a big roundabout with a triumphant bit of military sculpture on it. Straight on is Famagusta but taking the second exit left will take you up the coast about 5km to the famous Roman ruins of Salamis. Well worth a visit.
On further up the Karpas peninsular you enter the truly enchanting rural world of vast turtle beaches and rolling hills where you swim, walk or just sit with no one else around. Take a picnic country!
